Carlos Lopez Maltza

Biography

Maltza, Carlos Lopez. (Carlos Lopez Maestu), Filipino, Served with Loyalist forces, escaped to France after the fall of Barcelona, was placed into a concentration camp, FALB would not pay for his return to the Phillipines, nor would the American consul, he returned to Spain where some of his relatives, including his wife, still lived, he was arrested and imprisoned, in 1941 he was still being held in the Mira de Ebro Camp.

Taken from the files of Bob Steck notes from USSDA.  … a citizen of the Philippines Islands.  A letter from embassy in San Sebastion dated September 9, 1939 includes the following:  "Maltz states . . . [he was] a volunteer with the Spanish Loyalists.  Escaped into France following the fall of Barcelona.  In France he was placed in a concentration camp.  Eventually he made his way to Le Havre."  The Friends of the Lincoln Brigade would not pay for his return to the Philipines nor would the American consul.  Maltza returned to Spain where some of his family was living including his wife.  Shortly after his return he was arrested and imprisoned in Madrid.  Last know information was he was in Mira de Ebro Concentration Camp in 1941.
