January 16, 1903, Linton, Indiana; Father Charles Thorpe, mother Effie Thorpe; No prior military experience; 7th grade education; Single; Miner, WPA; CP September 1934, section organizer, UMWA Local 1200, Progressive Miners of America; Received Passport# 365233 on February 3, 1937 which listed his address as Route 2, Box 158, Plumfield, Illinois, and West Frankfort, Illinois; Sailed February 10, 1937 aboard the Washington; Arrived in Spain on February 20, 1937; Trained at Madrigueas; Attended OTS Pozo Rubio April; Served with the XV BDE, Washington BN, Co. 3, Section 1, Section Leader, Sargento, May-July 1937; After recovering from wounds was assigned to Tarazona Training Base November 7, 1937; Lincoln-Washington BN, Co. 1; Last unit Lincoln-Washington BN, Plana Mayor; Rank Sargento; Served at Brunete, Belchite, Retreats, and the Ebro Offensive; WIA Brunete July 9, 1937 during an assault on Misquito Hill, hit in left thigh, in hospitals Madrid, Villa Nueva de la Jara, Valde, Ganea; Returned to the US on December 15, 1938 aboard the Paris; d. January 1979.
