February 16, 1902, Vermillion, South Dakota; Father Martin Helgeson (1865-1943), mother Selma Nelson (1874-1955); US Marines 1922, served in China 1927-29, discharged 1930, Truck Driver, Rank Private; Single; Driver and Cleaner; CP March 1933, unit organizer; Received Passport# 402550 on May 21, 1937 which listed his address as 516 West Cedar Street, Vermillion, South Dakota; Sailed May 26, 1937 aboard the Vollendam; Arrested on June 20, 1937 when the vessel he was traveling to Spain on, the Joven Teresa, was intercepted by the French aviso Granit near Port-Vendres; Arrived in Spain via Massanet on June 22, 1937; Arrived in Spain on June 22, 1937; Served with the Medical services, Benicasim (?); Returned to the US on February 4, 1938 aboard the President Harding; Married Myrtle Isabell Breward (1912-1995) in 1944; d. December 15, 1990, Palmdale, Los Angeles County, California.
