Biography

k-Rossi, Mafaldo. (Nello Vergani, Leone Russo, Attilio Leoni); b. December 20, 1902, Molinella, Province of Bologna, Italy; Forced to emigrate in June 1923 and went to Belgium, France, and Algeria before moving to the Canada and the US; Italian American; Father Saturno Rossi, mother Elvira (Roncarati) Rossi; CP, headed the CP’s Italian language bureau; Communist Manager and Editor of L'Unità Operaia; Domicile New York; In Italy was active in the post-WWI fight against fascism in Molinella, attacked and harassed, he left Italy; In New York he was a well-known communist leader and member of the Alleanza Antifascista del Nord America; To Spain April 1937; Sent to OTS; Served with the XV BDE, Lincoln Battalion before transferring to the Garibaldis; Company Commander; Served Rank Teniente and political commissioner; Killed in action July 19, 1937 at Villanueva del Pardillo, during the Brunete Campaign; (Killed in action August 1937, Guadarrama, killed by artillery fire during an advance).
