January 31, 1917, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jewish, Romanian American, Single; Draftsman and Seaman, CP September 1937, received passport# 575370 on August 8, 1938 which listed his address as 73 Reed Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Arrived in Spain on August 31, 1938, Served with the Lincoln-Washington BN, Co. 3, KIA September 7, 1938 (September 24, 1938), Sierra Caballs, believed captured and executed. [1930 Federal Census . Lived at 1825 Linton Street, Pittsburgh, PA.Father and Mother from Romania, Merkowitz, Louis and Rachel. Sam fifth of six children only boy. Sophie (1913), Bertha (1914), Clara (1915), & Pearl (1921); In August 1936 he was apprehended as a stowaway aboard the SS Scanyork and was transferred and returned to New York aboard the SS Minneque. Family name may have originally been Merkowitz or Merlsoroitz]
